WA Commissioner for Children and Young People
Who’s got the box lid? Putting the puzzle of independent oversight together to effectively monitor services for children and young people.
In 2017 the Western Australian Commissioner for Children and Young People undertook a mapping exercise to better understand the nature and scope of independent oversight functions relating to services for children and young people in WA. The findings of this exercise revealed a number of gaps in both the nature of oversight mechanisms and the industry areas. The report we hope will lead to a consideration of a more coordinated, comprehensive and effective system of oversight in the current reform agenda. This session will explain the challenges involved in undertaking such an exercise, including defining independence and the best practice principles in relation to effective oversight mechanisms. The Commissioner’s report is available at www.ccyp.wa.gov.au .
