Robert Fitzgerald AM was a Commissioner on the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse for 5 years.
He has returned to the Productivity Commission where he has been serving as a fulltime Commissioner since January 2004, other than during the period of the Royal Commission. Prior to that appointment, Robert was the NSW Community and Disability Services Commissioner and Deputy Ombudsman.
Robert, a commercial lawyer by profession, has a diverse background and extensive experience in commerce, law, public policy and community services, including extensive involvement in many not-for-profit agencies. He has served on numerous NGO boards and committees including previously as President Australian Council of Social Service and Chair, Advisory Board, Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission.
Robert has conducted 17 national inquiries into economic and social policy issues including early childhood development, health workforce, aged care, paid parental leave and competition policy.
Robert holds degrees in commerce and law from the University of NSW and an honorary doctorate from the Australian Catholic University. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1994.
