The Western Australia (WA) Commissioner for Children and Young People (CCYP) approached Telethon Kids and CoLab to help them understand whether life is improving for children and young people and to hold government departments to account. The framework monitors three core aspects of children’s wellbeing —to ensure kids are healthy, safe and learning.

This initiative will provide a better understanding of the state of WA’s children and enable us to track their improvements over time. Importantly, the independence of the office will provide the impetus to spur action and to hold government to account. This is a key element setting this framework apart.

The framework will also be used to inform the design of a proposed survey of WA’s children and young people. The content will also be guided by what children and young people have told the Commissioner is important to them. For the first time, a statistically valid sample of WA children and young people will be surveyed about their experiences of life. CoLab and Telethon Kids will help CCYP design the instrument.

There is potential for this new approach to be used nationally.
